Supported Living FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Honest answers for families exploring Supported Living Services in San Diego County.
What are Supported Living Services (SLS)?
Supported Living Services help adults with developmental disabilities live independently in a home of their own choosing — with the right level of support built around them. At Big Moves Inc., that means personalized support plans, compassionate trained staff available around the clock, life skills coaching, and community integration, all delivered with the care and respect we would give our own family.
Who is eligible for services with Big Moves Inc.?
We welcome adults aged 18 and over who have a desire to live independently. Every applicant is considered on a case-by-case basis, with thoughtful attention to personal goals and support needs. We support individuals with developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disabilities, and mobility or communication challenges.
We do not serve clients who have an active alcohol and/or substance abuse addiction (though we may consider those willing to enter a rehabilitation program), or clients who could continuously be aggressive with our staff or other clients. Medical needs are assessed case by case.
How is Supported Living funded? Do families pay out of pocket?
Supported Living Services in California are typically funded through the regional center system — in our area, the San Diego Regional Center (SDRC). Our team collaborates closely with SDRC and is happy to walk your family through eligibility and funding questions. Reach out and we’ll help you understand your options.
What kind of daily support do you provide?
We make necessities easier: eating, meal planning & cooking, administering of medications, bathing & dressing, personal hygiene, house cleaning & maintenance, and laundry. We also reinforce independence with personal budgeting, banking & bill pay, scheduling medical services, public transportation use, emergency planning, and exploring community resources.
Where do clients live? Do they have to move into a facility?
No facility — that’s the heart of supported living. We care for your loved one at a home of their choice, in the community they choose to live in, at times that suit their lifestyle. We can even assist in establishing an independent and safe home environment, including locating a home, finding a roommate or direct care staff, and acquiring household furnishings.
Is support available 24 hours a day?
Yes. Our compassionate, trained staff provide 24-hour support, safety, and companionship, tailored to each client’s unique needs, goals, and independence level.
How do families stay involved?
Family involvement is one of our core values. We encourage strong, ongoing connections between participants and their loved ones throughout the program — family nights, family dinners, game nights, barbecues, and outings — and we work collaboratively with families to ensure continuity of support every step of the way.
